Gutter Guard Protection Reviews

There are dozens of gutter guard products on the market today. Finding a product that will work can be tricky, some products work best at keeping moss out of gutters while others can handle pine needles and small leaves - You should first determine what type of debris usually blocks your gutters before buying a gutter guard system.

Here you can find our opinion on these gutter guard products, the pros and the cons, our review.

Flexible Mesh

Within two months of installing this product the sunlight had caused the edges of the mesh to curl up and just a handful of moss from the roof had caused parts of the mesh to sink into the gutter. This product lost it's shape very quickly and kept very liitle out of the gutters partly because there were insufficient support clips provided and partly because it was just too flimsy.

Grid Guard

This product is similar to the mesh but with one big difference - it is far more rigid. At first glance it seemed this product would solve the problem of guards collapsing into the gutter. The Grid performed well with larger leaves and indeed there was no sign of it collapsing, unfortunately the gaps in this product were too much for small pieces of debris such as pine needles which entered the gutter.

This product is worth considering if your property does not suffer from pine needles or other smaller debris.

Gutter Brush/Hedgehog

This is one of the more unusual gutter products on the market today. The brush or "Hedgehog" is simply laid into the gutter with no clips or mechanical fixing required. It was by far the easiest to install and certainly suitable for DIY installation.

The product itself worked well at keeping out most of the larger debris, such as clumps of moss and leaves but small pieces of moss, pine needles and twigs managed to get through and were caught in the bristles. This itself did not cause a blockage but if this product was subjected to large amounts of moss etc we believe it would require occasional clearing out.

Some brushes can be seen from ground level but this one fitted flush to the top edge of the gutter.

Gutter Foam

Gutter foamThis product ticked so many boxes for us - it was rigid enough that it didn't collapse into the gutter. It wasn't visable from ground level and was very easy to install. This product is simply laid into the gutter with a dollop of sealant on the inside edge of the gutter.

This foam allowed water to pass through but kept out all but the smallest of particles. Well that is what was supposed to happen.

In Reality...

We had several issues with this product:

  • Expensive at over £7.50 ($11.60) per metre excluding installation labour costs
  • We could only find one place to buy this product (in the U.K) and that was online
  • Moss and leaves did not easily blow off the surface of the foam, instead they compacted and prevented heavy rainfall from entering the gutter

We had to re visit several properties where this product was installed because water was running off the front edge of the gutter - the moss, leaves, twigs etc that sat on the surface stopped the water from entering the foam and thus the gutter. If the product was sloped (rather than flat) then the debris could fall off and water might be able to pass freely into the gutter.
